Fr. Joseph Xavier is a Jesuit Priest. He was born in 1946. He did his graduation in Chemistry. He completed his masters in medical and Psychiatric Social Work in 1980 from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Bombay. From the same institute, he took his M.Phil. in 1987 and Ph.D. in 1988.
In M.A., he was adjudged the best outgoing student of the department of Medical and Psychiatric Social Work. He received the ICSSR (Indian Council for Social Science Research) Teacher Fellowship for a period of four years to do my Ph.D. studies.
In 1980, he joined the Department of Social Work, Loyola College, Chennai as a faculty. In 1989 he took the responsibility of the Deputy Director, Loyola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA) and the course director of the oneyear part time diploma course in Hospital management. He taught Human Resource Development to the students of Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration and Health Policies to the students of Hospital Management. He has been a visiting faculty in the Goa Institute of Management, Goa for two years. He was also a visiting faculty of Apollo Hospital, Chennai and taught the students of Business Management. In June 1995, he was appointed as the Secretary of Loyola College for three years. He was appointed the Principal of Loyola College, Chennai in September 2000. He held that position till 31st May 2004. He retired as the Principal of the College. As an academician, he was a recognized guide for M.Phil. and Ph.D. in the University of Madras. He has been a member of the Board of Research studies in the University of Madras for one term (1993 - 1996). He was the Chairperson of the Board of Examiners for the same University once and was a regular member of the Board of Examiners. More than once he was in the expert panel to prepare a course outline for Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi. He was an examiner for the National Eligibility Test (NET), an examination conducted by the University Grants Commission, for several years.
He was elected to the Syndicate of the University of Madras in 2001. He was elected as the President of the Principals' Association of the Madras Chapter of the Tamil Nadu Principals' Association. He was also elected as the General Secretary of the Association of Management of Private Colleges. He also held the post of the Treasurer of the Forum of Minorities, Tamil Nadu.
He was working as Reader, Department of Health Services Studies in Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, from June 2004 to August 2005. He was the President of the Xavier Board of Higher Education, an All India Body promoting Higher Education for two terms (2004 - 2010).
From June 2006 he took up the responsibility of the Coordinator of Research in the Indian Social Institute, Bangalore, a well know research and training center, run by the Jesuits of India. He was also the superior of the Jesuit Community for four years.
In 2012, he was appointed as administrator of the Jesuit Community, Loyola College, Chennai. He held this position for two years. In 2014, he was appointed as the director of Joseph Institute of Management, St. Joseph's college, Trichy. In 2016, he was appointed as the team leader of Thozhamai Illam, Kanuyakumari. He was also working in Loyola Institute of Technology and Science, Tovalai as a nodal person for the Jesuit Madurai Province. He was teaching in the department of Business Administration.
In 2018, he was appointed as the administrator and teaching faculty of Xavier Institute of Business Administration, St. Xavier's College, Palayamkottai. He was working as the Administrator/Minister of the Jesuit Community, Loyola College, Chennai for two years. From June 2014 onwards, he has been appointed as the Director of St. Joseph's Institute of Management, Trichy. As a trainer, he has conducted over 100 training sessions in interpersonal skills, leadership, conflict management and basics of psychological counseling for groups like College faculty, Student groups, religious groups, hospital administrators and managers. He is interest in developmental works as well.
As a person, he is intelligent, quick to grasp a situation, calm in the face of crisis, friendly and person oriented. He could work in a team effectively. His basic interests are human resource development in organizations, socially relevant researches, management, health policy analysis and developments in Higher Education.
